Tom Sivak, RPT, has been tuning pianos since 1980, when he took a course in Piano Technology from
Moody Bible Institute under the tutelage of Bob Carbaugh. A member of the Piano Technician's Guild,
Tom attained "Registered Piano Technician" status by passing a rigorous battery of tests, which cover tuning, repair, and regulation skills.
In addition to piano tuning, repair, and regulation, Tom is also an accomplished professional pianist (see Bio).
An important part of the tuning appointment is the “Mini-Concert”. Tom always takes a few minutes to sit and play the piano before packing up and going home.
The purpose for this “Mini-Concert” is three fold:
- It allows Tom to check that the action is working properly when played. Playing loudly, softly, fast passages, staccato, legato, using the pedals---merely tuning the piano does not afford the opportunity to experience the piano fully as does the “Mini-Concert”.
- It gives Tom the opportunity to listen to the piano as a pianist instead of a tuner.
- It cleanses the palette, so to speak. After a few minutes of Mozart and Chopin, Tom returns to “Tuner Mode” and rechecks the octaves and unisons. With refreshed ears and a new perspective, slight adjustments are implemented to perfect the tuning.
